Where hard surface stops, this is what should happen next
On most of the whole-home projects we run, hard surface takes the main level and carpet takes the bedrooms, the stairs and the upstairs. It is quieter overhead, warmer underfoot, and safer on a staircase — and it is where a house feels comfortable rather than impressive.
The difference between carpet that looks good for a decade and carpet that ripples in three years is almost entirely installation: correct pad, power stretching rather than knee-kicking, and seams planned away from sight lines and traffic paths.
Fibre
Nylon for the best resilience and traffic recovery; solution-dyed polyester and triexta for bleach-cleanable stain resistance.
Construction
Textured cut pile, soft plush, pattern loop and durable loop for stairs and landings.
Cushion
6–8 lb density rebond as standard, with moisture-barrier pad in homes with pets or young children.
Installation
Power-stretched over tack strip, seams sealed and heat-welded, waterfall or cap-and-band on stairs.

What actually makes carpet last — the carpet or the pad?
Both, but the pad is the part people cut and then regret. Cushion that is too soft or too thin lets the carpet backing flex with every step, which breaks down the fibre bundle from underneath. A 6–8 lb density rebond in a 7/16" thickness is the right specification for most homes.
Thicker is not better. Over about 1/2" the carpet moves too much underfoot, seams work loose, and most manufacturers will void the warranty.
Why does carpet ripple and wrinkle after a couple of years?
Almost always because it was installed with a knee-kicker instead of a power stretcher. A knee-kicker cannot generate enough tension across a full room, so the carpet relaxes over time and buckles.
We power-stretch every install. If you have an existing carpet that has rippled, it can usually be re-stretched rather than replaced — worth checking before you spend on new material.
Which carpet holds up best with dogs and kids?
Solution-dyed nylon or triexta in a textured cut pile with a moisture-barrier pad. Solution-dyed means the colour goes all the way through the fibre rather than being applied to the surface, so it does not bleach out from cleaning products or pet accidents.
Avoid a long, soft plush in a high-traffic path no matter how good it feels in the showroom — it shows every footprint and mats down first at the doorways.
Do you carpet stairs, and what are the options?
Yes, and stairs are the part of a carpet job where craftsmanship shows most. Waterfall installation runs the carpet straight over the nosing for a cleaner, more contemporary line. Cap-and-band wraps each tread and riser individually — more labour, more traditional, and it wears better on a heavily used staircase.
We also install runners over refinished hardwood treads, which is a good answer when you want wood on the staircase but not the noise or the slip.
How much disruption is a full second-floor carpet install?
Usually one to two days for a full upstairs including the staircase. We move standard bedroom furniture as part of the job; you only need to clear closets, breakables and anything electronic.
There is no cure time, so the rooms are usable the same evening. New carpet may have a mild odour for a day or two from the backing — running the HVAC fan clears it quickly.
