The 1990s builder package, thirty years on
West Plano — Willow Bend, Kings Ridge, Deerfield, the Preston Road corridor — went up largely in the 1980s and 90s, and it went up with a standard builder flooring package: carpet through the living areas and bedrooms, 12-inch ceramic tile in the entry, kitchen and wet rooms, and oak strip in a formal dining room if the house was upmarket. Thirty years later that package is at the end of its life all at once, which is why so many Plano jobs are whole-home rather than one room.
The single biggest decision is what happens to that ceramic tile. Tearing out 12-inch ceramic set in thinset on a slab is genuinely hard, dusty work, and it is where a cheap quote quietly becomes an expensive one. We price tear-out as a separate line so you can see it, and we do not float a new floor over old tile to avoid the job — that buys a hollow-sounding floor and a threshold height problem at every doorway.
The other Plano constant is height. Once the tile is gone you have a chance to run one material continuously through the whole ground floor with no transitions at all, which is the thing that makes a 1990s house stop reading as a 1990s house.

Can you put new flooring straight over my existing ceramic tile?
It is physically possible with a floating floor, and we generally advise against it. You raise the floor by the thickness of the old tile plus the new material, which creates a step at every exterior door and an awkward transition into any room that was not tiled.
It also sounds hollow underfoot, and if the old tile has any loose pieces the new floor telegraphs that movement. Tear-out costs more up front and gives you a floor that is right.
What does a whole-home floor replacement in Plano usually involve?
Tear-out of the existing carpet and tile, disposal, slab grinding and self-levelling where the old tile has left the slab uneven, then the new floor.

Should we do the stairs at the same time?
If the budget allows, yes. Doing stairs later means matching stain to a floor that has already started to age, and it means a second round of disruption through the middle of the house.
Carpeted builder stairs usually have construction-grade stringers underneath rather than finished treads, so hardwood stairs mean new treads, risers and nosings rather than sanding what is there. It is a real cost and worth seeing on the quote before you decide.
